SINKING ONCE MORE INTO THE SANDS OF MESOPOTAMIA?(14.04.2017)

Sinking Once More into the Sands of Mesopotamia?

The recent missile strike authorized by U.S. President Donald Trump in Syria after an apparent chemical weapons attack by the regime Bashar al-Assad represents a possible turning point in for new American Administration.  It is also a turning point in a direction that is unlikely to benefit President Trump and U.S. national interests in the long-run.President Donald Trump campaigned throughout both the Republican Party primaries and the General Election as a leader than would not simply embrace the Washington D.C. consensus where most every wrong in the world requires the white knight of the U.S. military to ride in and save the day.  In fact, during the campaign, he practi...

OBSERVING HUMAN RIGHTS IN THE MIDDLE EAST(13.02.2017)

Observing Human Rights in the Middle East

It becomes evident when traveling in war zones and isolated areas that the most vulnerable in such places are women and young children. In January, on a train bound from Mashhad, Iran, to Tabriz, I met a woman who looked to be in her 30s. Her name was Amir Nedai.Amir and I were sharing a 4-bed passenger cubicle with another couple from Iran; on a ride that would take 24 hours until our destination. Unlike Amir’s short stature, her husband was quite tall. He must not have liked the idea that his wife would be in the same cubicle with a foreign man (he and Amir were placed in different sections), because when he came inside our room, he did not even greet me.It felt ...

HUMANITARIAN DIPLOMACY IN SYRIA(18.08.2016)

Humanitarian Diplomacy in Syria

Omar Abdul Aziz Hospital in Aleppo was the latest one to be greeted by a Syrian bomb in July of this year, courtesy of the Syrian air force and its Russian training and supplies. Rami Abdel Rahman, head of the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, said those killed “included six children and eight women” in two government-controlled neighborhoods. He said dozens of people were also wounded.Just last April in nearby Zabbadani, the last remaining doctor, Mohammed Khous, was killed by a sniper as he left the hospital following an operation.Doctors and medical supplies are hardly available to assist those injured in the midst of a ruthless Syrian tragedy that has taken ove...

The July 15 Coup Attempt: Western Alliance, Geopolitics and New Pursuits

July 15, 2016 saw the opening of a new black page for Turkey with regards to her history of democracy. Turkey witnessed a coup attempt by a group of soldiers within the Turkish Armed Forces that are members of the Gülenist Terror Organization (FETÖ) and call themselves the "Peace at Home Council" during the dates of July 15-16 2016. In the official website of the Turkish Armed Forces and TRT a memorandum broadcasted which stated that the army seized control of the country, and martial law and a curfew was declared. After President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan called people resist against the coup, the attempt failed. This article approaches the coup attempt and its outcome within the cont...

PREVIOUS COUP MANIFESTS AND READING BETWEEN THE LINES (27.07.2016)

Previous Coup Manifests and Reading between the Lines

On 15th of July in 2016 an attempt of putsch was desired but it was prevented mainly by the resistance of the public. On the other hand, president Erdoğan’s call to streets was enthusiastically accepted by every part of the community can’t be ignored. All these happenings let the coup plotters down, and demoralized to see that they don’t have the public support behind them. We can easily say that physiological breakdown came afore the physical breakdown for the coup plotters. The 15th July’s shameful image of tanks on the streets turned to sublime images of people over the tanks against the coup. There are lots of things to speak and do about this unfortunate event but what I wo...
